Joining with the rank of Feldwebel 6./JG 52 in Sommer 1941 he managed to score his first three victories until the end of the year.
Transferred to a fighter school as instructor he only managed to rejoin frontline service in November 1942. He was assigned to the Staff of II./JG 52. In the short period up to the 17.12.1942 he scored a further six victories. On the 1st January 1943 he was promoted to Leutnant and in spring his rise as a top gun of JG 52 began. He scored his 20th kill on the 15.4.1943, added five kills on the 20.4.1943 alone (26. - 30.) and reached kills number 40 on the 30.6.1943 and kill number 75 on the 30.11.1943 respectively. From the 1st September 1943 he was in lead of 4./JG 52. Scoring his 100th victory on the 23.3.1944 he was awarded the Knights Cross three days later. Barely a month later, on the 16.4.1944 he was wounded badly by bomb debris on Chersonez (Crimea) airfield.
In August 1944 he returned and took over command of 5./JG 52, his score standing at 111. During the next months he again enjoyed good hunting fortunes in the skies over Hungary. On the 22.12.1944 he scored his last two kills. Taking of for another sortie from Csor that day, one of the landing gear struts hit a truck turning his machine into a burning heap of scrap (Bf 109 G-6, 442036, "black 11").
